Kankakee Memorial Gardens
Cemetery in Kankakee, Illinois
Kankakee County in the 1800’s consisted largely of swamps and marshes surrounding the Kankakee River. J.W. Mortell was one of many farmers in the area in the early 1900’s. In 1929, he decided to convert the farm to a cemetery. With S.E Fisher as secretary, Kankakee Memorial Park was established.
J.W. Mortell, who passed away in 1971, and his wife, Hattie are laid to rest here. S.E. Fisher is also interred in the Gardens. Their vision of a peaceful park setting for families to come and pay homage to those gone before has continued to this day.
Since that time, there have been over 10,000 burials at Kankakee Memorial Gardens.

Our Location
Many area families have generations laid to rest in the Park. Veterans from the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam are at rest here. A Memorial Day service commemorating their contributions is held each year in their honor. In 2003, the current owners added the Veterans Garden to the cemetery.
Kankakee Memorial Gardens is proud to be a member of the Kankakee community. The heritage left to us from those early settlers is a reminder of their pioneering spirit and their commitment to the land. It is a reminder of where we have traveled and with whom we walked.
